of New Art- Detroit MONA 1248 Washington Blvd 2nd Floor Detroit MI 28226 313-9612845 Jef Bourgeau Director detroitmona@aol.com Ground Zero, an exhibition of post 911 art, took place during July 13th and Aug 24th 2002 in Detroits Museum of New Art, in the historic Book Building on Washington Boulevard, in the downtown center of the city. The show , organized by Artists Frank Shifreen, Daniel Sheffer and Julius Vitali, features the work of over 50 artists in the 2nd floor exhibition space of the Museum. Artists from all over the country have created works in many styles, varied media and viewpoint that depict artists reactions to the world since last September and the drama of cultural clash. Under the guidance of Museum Director Jef Bourgeau, the Museum has been at the forefront of Detroits resurgence as a center of innovative arts and culture. He hopes that the exhibition can help in healing and also examine our present and future. The same organizers created "From the Ashes", a renowned exhibition in New York that galvanized the art community . It opened on October 8th 2001 and was a memorial for those lost and a benefit for the families of fallen heroes. Paul Lieberman , in an Article in the LA times about the exhibition. Wrote- " the events of Sept 11 were an overwhelming visual experience that demanded a visual response ... In the midst of chaos and destruction, art stands witness to the creative soul"" The works in Ground Zero examine the issues of 9/11 and the seismic shift that has occurred as a result of the challenge to western values by radical Islam. We have changed. Irony and distance have given way to a more serious, committed, if polarized time. Daniel Scheffer says , " We have ended an isolationist era in the U.S and have come face to face with our own vulnerabiltiy and strength. We are connected to the rest of the world." The exhibition organizers engaged the public in exploration and dialogue . In the imagination, images can reveal knowledge not accessible to logic. We are an IMAGI- nation impacted by visual bombardment from an endless data stream. This show featured art that illuminates, educates and entertains. We also want to express the wonderful American spirit and solidarity that has united us all since the tragedy. Frank Shifreen States "This show can be a memorial to those lost in the tragedy at the WTC, at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania , and to our innocence, our sense that we in the U.S. had a protected status, among the peoples of the world. Everyone in America has been affected by the destructive power of ideology, over the sensibilty of human feeling. The power of art and of image to reach deeper into the psyche, beyond rationalizations and dialectic, will be important in the future transformation of ourselves and humankind." Tentative list of artists for "911" include Tom Corn, Aki Kimoto, Carla Cubit, Tom Klem, Stefan Eins, Danny Scheffer, Alan Rosner, Gilbert Flores, Rafeal Salas, Bill Rabinowitz, Dr. Barnaby Ruhe, Willloughby Sharp, Franz Vila, Francisco Henriquez Sims, Charles Foster Hall, Amy Shapiro, Scott Pfaffman, Dov Some of the highlights of the exhibition include - electronic , technologic and internet connections co-ordinated by Willoughby Sharp. -A portrait painting marathon co-ordinated by Dr. Ruhe and Frank Shifreen. All proceeds to go to the victims , families and support services - Memorial, by Danny Scheffer, an self-replicating and Rhizomatic art project to be placed in neighborhoods and public places throughout the city. A Web site is being created, nine-one-one.org, that will display art related to the exhibition, It can be a repository of healing and dialogue as well as virtual monument to those lost. We will use this site as a way of using technology and media as the means of further uniting the American people thru art. , that will be a part of "From the Ashes" 9/11 was the day of the attack
and is also the call for emergency help. Help came so willingly from rescuers
to people in need during the collapse, and they saved many thousands of
lives, without regard for personal safety. We still need help to release
the grief, trauma and anger that we hold. |
