Curators Frank Shifreen, Scott Pfaffman, and Stefan Eins are pleased to

announce a new group exhibition, "Counting Coup," at Theater for the New City, 155 First

Ave, at 10thStreet, Manhattan. Featuring the work over 80 contemporary artists,

"Counting Coup" is an energetic and wide-ranging presentation of art in response to the 2000

Presidential Election and the new Bush agenda.

Including works that are by turns humorous, angry, informative, and

visionary, the exhibit features work in a variety of media--paintings, prints, photography,

digital imagery, and found objects. It includes well known artists such as Barbara Kruger, Leon

Golub, the Guerilla Girls, Joseph Kosuth, Tom Otterness, and Dread Scott, as well as

some of New York's most innovative young artists like Carla Cubit and Sante Scardillo.

(A complete list of participating artists is attached.)

The pieces on display were selected following an open call for work which

expresses the confusion, anger, fear, or concern about the future of democracy felt by

artists followingElection 2000. According to co-curator Frank Shifreen,

"From the enthusiastic response to our call, it's clear that

socially concerned artists across the country have not forgotten the

unethical way in which the candidate who received the fewest votes was selected by five

conservative judges to take office. Nor have contemporary artists ignored the dreadful policies

already put in place by the new administration." Indeed, the response to their call has

been so strong that the curators are currently working out arrangements to send the exhibit on

tour [to over a dozen cities] throughout the country.
